It’s not every day you get to be in the presence of such a spiritual giant as C.S. Lewis! This week we took some of the men to see an 80 minute live theatrical performance called “The Most Reluctant Convert.” Max McLean gave a remarkable performance as C.S. Lewis using his autobiography and other writings to portray his personal journey to faith. It was a memorable event for the men to attend live theatre and to hear the inspirational story of one of our most quoted theologians in recent times. Barber Shop Ministry

In some cultures the Barber Shop is more than just a place to get a haircut. It’s a place where friend’s hang out for hours and community happens. At the URM our new barber has special plans for the new barbershop as well. Chris is a brand new program graduate and our new barber. He will be managing the space that Deed and Truth recently renovated. Chris grew up without a dad and fell quickly into gang life in Los Angeles being introduced by his own brother. Since arriving at the URM and skid row I asked a lot of questions to get acclimated to this mission field. One missing ingredient I noticed was the absence of a thriving, vibrant, bible-teaching, evangelical African-American church within the confines of skid row even though the largest percentage of those experiencing homelessness are African-American. I began to pray and seek a solution. God has changed all that… Life-changing transformation and long term recovery will not be accomplished without the Spirit of God working internally and commitment to the body of Christ (Church) externally.
