Best Day of 2020
Updated: Jan 23
“This was the best day of 2020!” That was the immediate response from a first-time Deed and Truth volunteer when I asked him to share his experience. Here is more about his “best day.”
It goes without saying that 2020 has been a difficult and challenging year. In a time of so much uncertainty, when the storms of life seem to offer more questions than answers, it is easy to ask “why” and to miss the rainbows of God’s goodness all around. Last weekend, in the midst of it all, I saw a rainbow. And even more, I had the opportunity to be a part of it.
My Saturday morning began with a drive out to Riverside. I picked up a donated bedroom set from a generous family, loaded my truck, and drove back to an empty apartment in Irvine. A woman and her young daughter were given a gift card for lunch and were sent on their way. It was our job, our team of 15, to turn this house into a home. Up and down the stairs we climbed, carrying furniture, pictures, towels, and bedsheets. Helping hands and loving arms carried dishes, glassware, utensils, and a microwave. Up and down the stairs we climbed, and with each step, I watched that empty apartment transform. We worked for several hours, and before we knew it, this sweet family had returned to a Home. With tears in her eyes, and ours, this mama shared her story and together as a team, we prayed. In that moment, I no longer felt like “just a volunteer.” I had the privilege of being allowed into this family’s world and hearing the heart of this single mother. It is a connection and a blessing I cannot explain. What a gift it was for me to serve with this team, to be part of this family’s brand-new start, and to know our God was glorified.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have served with the Deed & Truth to turn this house into a home for a family who, not too long ago, was experiencing homelessness. I give thanks for the rainbow! by John Yurkovich
